me and one of my best friends Brian Kinwald.
Profile On: Gabe Boudreau
Age: Born Oct. 21st1977, in Orange California
Years Racing:Since October 1988 so that would be 12 for all you math wizards!
Years as a Professional Driver: December of 1995-Feburary of 1998, still racing but no sponsorships anymore!
First Recognizable Sponsor: R.P.M. Performance Products, Richard Rhohart of Rhoharts Precision Molds was the first guy to give me a chance and I did not let him down!
Favorite Race: Has to be the Cactus Classic held at SRS Raceway every March! That was the first track that I won a big 2wd Mod race at and I have enjoyed going to that race since my very first trip in 1997.
Reason For Getting into racing: My father Johnny B. noticed when I was young that I was hanging around the wrong crowd at school and heading down a road that had a dead end. So he bought me an RC10 to motivate me to get good grades in school and stay out of trouble. If I did then I got to race as much as I wanted to. This was the main reason for starting to race. Then as time went on it began to grow on me. I adapted to the sport quickly and began to win local club races at Break-A-Way Raceway, a local track in Norco Ca. I was kicked out of the Novice class only 1 month from when I started to compete. My father and some of the other local racers noticed my gift for driving. I have always been a big fan of motor sports since I can remember. So racing these off-road buggies was allot of fun for me!
Best and Worst thing's about racing: Well the best thing for me was the fact that I wasn't sitting at home watching TV and I was actually doing something productive. Also I met almost all of my lifetime friends from racing! I was fortunate enough to get to travel around the USA and met allot of people on the way. The worst thing in my opinion about racing has to be HACKS! I can't stand that. It has bugged me since my early days of racing. I like to drive as fast as I can without taking people out. That was the one thing that always separated me from some of the other racers. I would not intentionally take someone out unless they did it to me first. I like a good clean race, and I don't care about losing to a faster guy, unless he took me out to get by of course!
How I came to Be: Well back when I was only about 12 years old I watched a race at R.C.H. in Costa Mesa California. The race was the Reedy Race of Champions. I had been racing for a few years so I knew who some of the fast guys were. But there was this one driver that impressed me the most. That was Derek Furutani. He was racing for Team Associated at the time and was one of the Top drivers in the WORLD! Well Derek would come out to Break-A-Way and race every now and then and I would love to sit and watch him drive. I remember telling my friends that I was going to be as good as Derek one day and they would just laugh. Well as time went on and I got a little older, and wiser I started to really get serious about racing at the Championship level. So in 1995 I began my quest at becoming a world class racer. I set the goal of competing in the IFMAR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS that I knew were going to be in America. I began to hang out with the best racers at M-n-M hobbies and at So Cal Raceway. I met Brian at So Cal in 1995 and we quickly became good friends. Brian helped me along the way more than any other single person. He was kind of a mentor so to speak and would help me with just about anything that I had a problem with. We would share idea's on just about anything. I raced in my first Nationals at the age of 17 at So Cal Raceway, it was the NORRCA NATS. and I competed in the Expert-Mod Truck Class. I did pretty good only missing the A-main by 3 or 4 seconds and finished 3rd in the C-main. Not bad, considering that I was using a RPM truck that weighed in at a whopping 72 oz.! And also I will have to say I was quite nervous! Next I competed in the Reedy Truck Race of Champions at The Ranch Pit Shop. I made the A-main as the 6th qualifier, ahead of some of the days top sponsored drivers! I was still using the RPM truck and still kicking ass! At this time I started working at So Cal as their Race Director. This helped me to be at the track even more to learn and practice. That is the biggest part of going fast. You must practice, practice, practice to go fast! I bought a Losi XX in 1995 and started running in the Pro-Mod class at So Cal. You have to understand that the pro class at So Cal was made up of like the last 5 IFMAR A-mains, every race night! You would have Brian Kinwald, Greg Hodapp, Derek Furutani, Shorab Tavakoli, Mark Pavidis, Curtis Schlott Jr., Billy Easton, Colin McCrae, Jimmy Babcock, Barry Baker, Jason Corl, Scott Hughes, Jason Ruona, Bobby Smith, and a host of other fast drivers every night, racing me and it really taught me how to go fast under pressure. I also got access to the track when others couldn't, so I had even more testing time! And that always helps especially when I was getting ready for a big race that was coming up. I caught my first real break on a club night at So Cal in Dec. of 1995. I had been talking to some friends at Team Associated and they got me a hook up through Mike Reedy. He put me on the 100% team that gave me access to free parts, motors, and a limited supply of batteries. This was really got a jump start on my career. Only 1 1/2 months from the Reedy Race and here I was sitting on a fat sponsorship! I ran the Reedy Race at So Cal in 1996 and did good. Qualified 13th and finished 3rd in the B-main in 2wd open class. Not bad for my first world class event. I was happy with it and carried that momentum into the 1996 season. Next I went to the Florida Winter Champs. This was my first time traveling to a race ever! It was allot of fun but I realized how hard it was to go fast on foreign turf!
